Refined or crude sunflower oil: which do you need?
Refined sunflower oil has been neutralised, bleached and deodorised. It is clear, light in colour and neutral in taste, and it is the oil sold for frying, cooking and food manufacturing. Distributors, wholesalers, supermarkets, caterers and food factories buy refined oil, usually packed in bottles, jerrycans or drums.
Crude sunflower oil is the oil as it comes from pressing and extracting the seed, before refining. It is bought by refineries and bulk importers that refine it themselves, and it usually ships in flexitanks or IBC tanks.
Quality parameters
Edible sunflower oil is traded against the Codex Standard for Named Vegetable Oils (CODEX-STAN 210-1999). Its quality limits for refined oils are:
| Parameter | Codex limit for refined oil |
|---|---|
| Acid value | max. 0.6 mg KOH/g |
| Peroxide value | max. 10 meq active oxygen/kg |
| Matter volatile at 105°C (moisture) | max. 0.2% |
| Insoluble impurities | max. 0.05% |
| Soap content | max. 0.005% |
| Iron / copper | max. 1.5 mg/kg / 0.1 mg/kg |
Crude oil is bought for refining, so it is traded on contract specifications instead, mainly free fatty acids (FFA), moisture and impurities, and phosphorus. Our offers state the values for the lot, and the contract names the laboratory that will test them.
High-oleic sunflower oil is a different product from standard sunflower oil: under Codex it must contain at least 75% oleic acid. If you need high-oleic oil, say so in your inquiry and we will tell you whether we can supply it.

Why buy sunflower oil from Tanzania
Tanzania grows around 500,000 tonnes of sunflower seed a year. The crop grows mainly in the central regions of Dodoma, Singida and Manyara, and the government aims to more than double seed output by 2030 under its Agenda 10/30 programme. Buying directly from a Tanzanian exporter, with no middleman, and shipping from Dar es Salaam keeps the supply chain short for buyers in East Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Europe.
