Tanzanian ruby: Winza and Morogoro
Ruby is the red gem variety of the mineral corundum. Tanzania has several ruby areas, two of which supply our stones:
- Winza, in Mpwapwa district, central Tanzania, which became known after a gem rush in 2007–2008 and is mined from deep primary deposits.
- Morogoro, where rubies and spinels have been mined since the 1980s in the Uluguru Mountains, including around Matombo, from marble-type deposits.

How rubies are described and valued

|---|---|
| Colour | Hue, tone and saturation; a strong, pure red is the most valued |
| Clarity | Inclusions are normal in ruby; their type and visibility affect value |
| Cut | Shape, proportions and finish |
| Carat weight | Fine rubies above one carat are scarce and priced much higher per carat |
| Treatment | Heating and other treatments are common in ruby and are disclosed in the offer |
