Description
Tamim International exports cut tanzanite to jewellers, jewellery manufacturers, gem dealers and wholesalers worldwide. Tanzania restricts the export of rough tanzanite so that stones are cut in the country, and we export cut stones only. Each offer describes the stones by carat weight, colour, clarity, cut and any treatment, and no payment is requested until you have seen the stones and signed the contract.

What tanzanite is
Tanzanite is the blue-to-violet gem variety of the mineral zoisite. It is known commercially from only one place in the world: a small area in the Merelani (Mirerani) Hills of northern Tanzania (overview). Most tanzanite on the market has been heat-treated to remove brownish tones and bring out the blue and violet colour, so treatment should always be disclosed.
How cut tanzanite is described and valued
| Factor | What buyers look at |
|---|---|
| Colour | Hue (blue to violet), tone and saturation; strong, saturated colour commands the highest prices |
| Clarity | Most fine tanzanite is eye-clean; visible inclusions lower the value |
| Cut | Shape, proportions and finish, and how well the cut shows the colour |
| Carat weight | Larger stones of top colour are rarer and priced higher per carat |
| Treatment | Heating is standard for tanzanite and is disclosed in the offer |
Trade colour grades such as “AAA” or “AA” are used by many sellers but are not a common standard, so we describe each stone or parcel in plain terms and you can ask for an independent laboratory report.
